When Should Your Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists advises that children undergo their first orthodontic screening by age 7. This early assessment allows Dr. Donald Simi at Simi Orthodontics to evaluate if orthodontic treatment will be necessary and determine the most suitable time for intervention. Many local dentists are equipped to identify potential orthodontic issues early, sometimes referring patients to our practice before reaching age 7.
The Importance of Early Evaluation
Early diagnosis and treatment can play a crucial role in guiding the proper alignment of erupting teeth, preserving adequate space for permanent teeth, and reducing the risk of fractures in protruding front teeth.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Intervention
When early treatment is indicated, Dr. Simi can guide the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth. This proactive approach can also:
- Help in controlling the width of the upper and lower dental arches.
- Create sufficient space for permanent teeth, avoiding the need for extractions.
- Minimize the chances of impacted teeth.
- Address habits like thumb sucking or abnormal swallowing and speech patterns.
Early treatment simplifies later treatments once all permanent teeth have erupted.
Is Early Treatment Suitable for Every Child?
While early treatment offers significant benefits, it may not be necessary or beneficial for every child. Some orthodontic issues are better addressed during the teenage years when all permanent teeth have emerged or when growth is more advanced. At Simi Orthodontics, treatment plans are tailored to meet each child’s unique needs. If early treatment is not warranted, patients may be enrolled in our Orthodontic Supervisory Program.
Understanding the Orthodontic Supervisory Program
Our Orthodontic Supervisory Program is designed for patients not yet ready for active treatment. Through regular recalls every 6-8 months, we monitor the eruption patterns of permanent teeth. In some cases, early removal of baby teeth may be recommended to enhance tooth alignment and potentially shorten future orthodontic treatment durations. We collaborate closely with your family dentist to ensure comprehensive dental care.Â
Additional Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
In addition to enhancing your child’s smile, orthodontic treatment can improve bite function, facilitate better oral hygiene practices, prevent premature tooth wear, and contribute to the long-term health of natural teeth.
Early Treatment vs. Adolescent Braces
Early orthodontic intervention can address significant issues early on, potentially preventing more severe problems and simplifying future treatment phases. However, final alignment corrections typically occur during Phase II (full braces) in the teenage years, after all permanent teeth have erupted. Individual circumstances may vary, and additional orthodontic work may still be necessary based on ongoing assessments.
Maintaining Dental Health During Orthodontic Treatment
Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or other appliances require diligent oral hygiene practices. We strongly recommend regular dental check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist every six months to ensure optimal dental health throughout the treatment process.
