Retainer Instructions
Wearing Your Retainers
- You are now in the retention phase of your orthodontic treatment.
- In order to maintain the position of your teeth, it is important for you to wear your retainer(s) as directed by Dr. Simi.
- If they become broken, lost or ill fitting please call the office for an appointment.
- There will a lab charge for replacement retainers and for repair of broken retainers, so please be careful with them.
Caring For Your Retainers
- Keep them in the retainer case when not being worn.
- If you own a dog or cat, be careful not to leave your retainer(s) lying around, they will think they are a new toy!
- Do not wrap them in a napkin at lunch; many retainers have been lost this way.
- They can also warp if you leave them in your car in the hot sun.
Cleaning Your Retainers
- You can brush them with toothpaste and your toothbrush.
- You can also use a denture cleaner like Efferdent. Use lukewarm water to dissolve the tablet.
- Soak the retainers for a few minutes then rinse them well with cool or lukewarm water.
- NEVER soak them in hot water, boil them or put them in the dishwasher. They are made of plastic and will melt!
